 "Great Product" 2010-01-21

"A Fantastic Lens for the Price" 2010-01-10
By S. N. Mayfield (Eugene, OR USA)
I didn't buy this lens from Amazon but I do own it. It's a great telephoto lens and I've been really happy with the picture quality. My only gripe is that I wish it had a stabilizer. Even with that's only slightly dim, like that of a cloudy day for example, causes the photos to sometimes be blurred because the lens is long and heavy, so small movement can cause blurring. It isn't impossible to use without a tripod, though. It's an extremely good lens for the price, that's for sure. Overall I'm very satisfied with it!

"Was free with the deal I did, but..." 2009-10-27
By Moo (Mad city, Wisconsin)
I got it free with my new camera, but I wish I sold it and bought a 55-250mm with IS or a 18-200mm with IS. They are much more expensive, but I hate having to remove it to put on a 18-55mm IS lens for indoor or closer range things. I can't complain too much since it was free. It's just that to fit in my camera case well this must be attached and in most cases I need to remove it and grab my other lens to take a picture. Not a bad lens, but you may get annoyed when you want to switch back and forth like me. Don't let this review deter you from buying it, I just had to put my two cents in.

"It was good enough for me." 2009-10-27
By Daigo (Detroit, MI)
I have EOS Revel T1i, and very very beginner. That being said: I have 10-22mm ultra-wide, and 18-55mm standard zoom, and they are both fine, but I just wanted a lens that goes above 55mm.

So here it is. I do not have any complain about the picture quality so far, I just wanted to see what 300mm is like, and its definitely a different world, and I am happy to know that. USM is pretty nice too, so you may want to spend a few more bucks on it to get it. My standard zoom lens has standard motor and its slow and noisy. Anyway, I got what I expected, and again, I am happy.

 "All-in-one zoom lens." 2010-01-24

I have a Canon Rebel XTi digital camera and also a Sony DSC-H7

with a 15X optical zoom. For travel pictures I have always used

the Sony because it didn't require all the extra lenses. This

Tamron lens gives me the zoom range I need (14X) with the Canon

without having to take along a lot of other lenses.

"Depends what you are looking for..." 2010-01-04
By Jephu (NJ, USA)
Is this a good lens? Yes. Is it right for you? It depends.

If you plan to do a fair amount of *outdoor* travel and want to zoom without swapping lenses, this lens is probably right for you. Why?

- This lens is much lighter than lenses with VR/OS (vibration reduction/optical zoom). If most of your shooting is outdoors, then you probably need a light lens more than you need VR/OS.

- The photo quality is good when zooming, as long as you have enough light to use a high shutter speed.

- I've found the focus to be relatively fast and quiet, which is nice when you are taking photos on the go.

- This lens is really dropping in price, so you'll save some bucks while still getting a good quality lens.

If you plan to shoot indoors or want to take the best pictures possible, this is probably not the best lens for you. Why?

- If you are traveling and want to take pictures indoors, consider going for a lens with an f stop of 1.8 or lower or at least getting a lens with VR/OS. The f stop only goes down 3.5 on this lens, and gets higher when you start to zoom.

- If you want to take the best picture possible and you are traveling and don't care about the weight, get a lens with VR/OS. This will help take clear picture when you zoom or are dealing with overcast.

- If you are not traveling and have all the time in the world, why not get a nice 50-200 zoom and just swap it in as necessary. You can get one that is a better quality and cheeper than this lens.

Hope that helps!

"Great Lens, Super Convenient, A Little Slow" 2009-11-23
By D. Patterson (Northfield, MN United States)
I love this lens, it was a Christmas gift last year. My only complaint is that my batteries SEEM to drain a little faster with it, and it focuses and takes photos a little slower than the original 18-55 lens. I also have a 75-300 lens. This lens is the best for general use, since I never have to switch anything or carry anything extra. I am not a professional, just an amateur that takes thousands of photos a year. With two little kids in tow, the convenience and versatility of this lens cannot be beat!

 "Some trade-offs, but overall a good all-in-one lens" 2009-10-02
By DRC (Austin, TX United States)
In the 18-55mm range, I find that this lens mostly performs like the Canon EF-S 18-55mm that came with my Digital Rebel kit. It definitely has compromises, though, which were necessary to get the 13.8x zoom range into a single lens. The Tamron 18-250mm vignettes generally on f/4 and wider when you're at the wide angle end of the zoom range. The vignetting can be compensated for in Photoshop, but it becomes worse when a filter is attached. I have to be really careful if I use a polarizer to keep the aperture narrower than f/4. The sharpness at the far end of the telephoto range isn't the best, either. This article goes into that in some detail, comparing it to a Canon professional telephoto lens:

[...]

Generally, they're comparable at the center of the image, but the Tamron sharpness falls off significantly toward the corners when used at the telephoto end of the zoom range. This matches my observations.

As with all non-stabilized telephoto lenses, you really need a fast shutter speed to overcome camera shake at the far end of the telephoto range. I find that 1/320s or faster is generally adequate with this lens, but due to the narrow aperture requirement (f/6.3) at 250mm, it means that you really need a lot of light to take an effective telephoto shot at ISO 100. Since I take mostly landscapes, that's not normally an issue. If I were more into wildlife or people photography, however, it definitely would be.

[...]

I compared it specifically with this review of the EF-S 18-55 to convince myself that I wouldn't be losing any quality or functionality at the wide angle end of the zoom:

[...]

I'm not sure if I agree with their vignetting tests, though. I personally think the vignetting is worse with the Tamron.

All in all, the Tamron 18-250mm lens is a good travel lens and is an excellent choice for the back country, where weight is a major issue but a 3x zoom just won't capture everything you want. It takes great shots up to about the 150mm range and OK shots beyond this (tripod strongly recommended for 200mm and above.) I've taken great candid portraits and wildlife photos with it, although neither is really this lens' strength. In general, it's not going to give you the same results as a professional lens, but for those who need to travel light, it would be hard to find a better lens for the same weight.

I am so happy with this lens. It is everything I need all in one handy little package. Great for everyday shots at 18mm, then extends to fabulous zoom capability at 250 mm. It is only slightly less a lens than my Canon 300mm, but so much easier to have on my camera.

Images are sharp, crisp and clear. I don't know when I'll need to get another lens!

 "bad lens" 2009-08-12
By Otto Haring (Miami)
I used it to shoot from an elevated angle. The result were disappointing.....I paid $[...] but I don't think it is even worth more than $[...] to tell you the truth.

The colors are lifeless, "burnt-out". There are no details on the images. You can see the samples on my site: [...] Look for the huge house with the red roof. You will see what I am talking about. Normally, I use the 17-40 L on my elevated system. I thoguht the 20mm would be a good replacement even if it not as good as the 17 40. I think even the 18-55 Canon kit lens produces better images. Add a few hundred bucks and buy a decent lens.

 "Great, versitile lens" 2008-07-14
By John Koehn (Arlington, VA)
I was a bit concerned at first with the fixed focal length, but it has proven to be very versatile. It takes very sharp pictures, even when fully opened in low light. I have not noticed any of the vignetting that other users have mentioned.

Bottom line: great wide angle lens for the price. Useful for landscapes and tight space, low light situations.

"disappointing, especially for a fixed lens" 2008-03-03
By Neurasthenic (New York City, New York)
This is one of the first two lenses I bought when I switched to a Canon SLR about five years ago. I've had plenty of opportunity to use it since then, both with film and (full frame) digital.

The idea behind this lens is a good one -- 20mm is wide enough to allow for landscape and architectural photos, and it focuses close enough for entertaining photos of people's faces, taken about a foot away from their noses (note that you'll need either a ring light or lucky ambient light to pull off the latter). There is some pincushion distortion, but nobody would accuse the results of looking like a funhouse mirror, as would be the case with a fisheye lens, for example.

f2.8 is fast enough; I've no complaints there. Unfortunately, this camera consistently vignettes -- the corners of every image are dim. This is true even with a bare lens, and filters make it worse. You can correct the problem in image editing software, or just crop the image, but what's the point of buying a 20mm lens if you're going to have to crop every photo you take with it?

If this had been a cheap zoom lens, I'd have expected the problem and not been bothered by it. With a fixed lens, however, I think there isn't much excuse.

Canon still charges about the same ($400) that I paid for this lens years ago. By now, they ought to have upgraded this thing, or dropped the price. It is the worst EF lens I own.

-- addendum: I've recently been using a Canon EOS IX, which takes APS film. This lens is much more useful with that camera, though using even APS-H, you get something akin to the image you would get from a 35mm lens on a 35mm negative.

 "wide angle attachment" 2010-02-03

"Bad quality lens. But it does what it says." 2009-12-07

I give it 2 stars because the price is about right. If you want to do real nice wide angle shots, you may want to spend more cash and get the right gear. But if you just want to shoot around and you are beginning, then it's ok.

DO NOT USE FLASH WITH THIS, it leaves a nasty shadow on the corners and bottom of the picture.

"Decent results considering the price." 2009-12-05
By H. S. Pope (Richmond, VA)
I purchased this lens attachment in lieu of purchasing a brand-name wide angle lens. I wasn't expecting much, since it was only $10. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

I tested this attachment with my Canon EOS XSi and an EF-S 18-55mm lens, fully closed to 18mm. I shot images with and without the wide angle attachment, and noted a clear difference between the width of the target area. I viewed the images side by side on my large monitor (32" LCD HDTV) and did not see a significant loss of image quality. There was slight loss of sharpness, but not much.

Using the macro attachment with the same lens, I noticed a clear difference in the minimum focal distance of the lens, but I did not notice any loss of picture quality. The close up image was very sharp when viewed on the computer screen.

In both cases, autofocus did not work properly, so I had to use manual focus to achieve the best pictures. When holding the shutter button down halfway, the green focus indicator within the view finder worked properly though, and helped me get the best focus.

There are clearly higher quality lenses that serve this purpose, but this lens (wide angle and macro) is definitely something I will carry in my bag until I can purchase those more expensive lenses. It is definitely worth the $10, if you need something now.

NOTE: I also added pictures showing my test results. Follow the "See all # customer images" link below the main product picture to see my examples.

The 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC lens was exclusively designed to suit the characteristics of digital SLR cameras. Ideal as a standard starter zoom lens, this lens provides an equivalent range of approx. 28-80mm when used with a Canon digital SLR camera (*). The use of aspherical lenses provides correction for various aberrations throughout the entire zoom range and produce a high level of optical performance.

DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.

"Good replacement for Canon 18-55" 2010-02-22

Bought this lens after I broke the original 18-55 lens of my EOS Rebel xTi. The official Canon replacement was ridiculously overpriced, so I got this one. Works just fine! I can't evaluate the new lens in technical terms, I don't notice any differences between the new and old lens, except this one looks a lot more solidly built. Same filter size.

I got this lens for my new Canon 7D, as somewhat of a filler lens till I got another one, but for being less than $100 it worked like a charm, even shot a video on it, vignettes on the 50mm side, but what can you ask for for such a cheap lens

For under $100 you will not find a better lens than this. Equal to about 29mm on a Canon crop body dSLR, it is a wide angle lens. This is a very under rated lens in my opinion FOR THIS PRICE. Built well and very sharp at F8.

"Wide Angle: it is not!" 2010-01-08
By S. Cho (LA)
Bought it thinking it would be great wide angle lens, it was not much better than my Canon 18-55mm lens that came with my T1i. If your looking to replace 18-55mm lens, then I would buy this one because the price is unbeatable. As far as construction, I have to give it to Sigma. The feel and weight distribution slightly better than the Canon lens.

In addition, it came with a hood. really nice add-on. If your looking to replace your 55mm lens, this is the one. If you want an extra good lens, this is the one. If you want Wide Angle Shots, not the one.

Overall, I am keeping this lens, just in case, my orginal breaks down.

"Opteka HD² 0.20X Professional Super AF Fisheye Lens for Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, XTi, XS, XSi..." 2010-02-23
By J. DEMELO (Boston, MA)
Just received this conversion lens. Like other reviews have said, you get what you pay for. But in this case, this isn't such a bad thing. If you want to have some fun experimenting with a wide angle, fisheye lens before purchasing a 600 to 900 dollar professional option, it's definitely worth it. Fisheye pictures are a bit of a novelty, and the whole fun factor might wear out over time. All the more reason to go with an inexpensive option.

1. I'm not entirely sure why this would matter but the lens is in fact made in China, not Japan. With that being said, I received a solid, well made lens and the glass is crystal clear. I was impressed with the construction. The rubber grips work nicely, and the threads allow the lens to effortlessly and smoothly screw into your lens. It also comes with two adapter rings which allow it to fit anthing from 52 to 58mm. It fits my Canon 18 - 55mm kit lens with the largest of the two adapters. Without either of the two adapters, it fits nicely into my Canon prime f/1.8 50mm lens. It also comes with a mostly worthless cleaning cloth and a small, felt-like pouch to store the lens in when not in use. The pouch was a nice touch.

2. The lens is fairly heavy. While this might feel good when you hold it, I kind of wonder if the weight might affect the "gears" inside my kit lens while the camera is auto-focusing. I can't help but feel like it might add significant strain. Doesn't seem to be an issue so far, but may be worth mentioning. The weight does seem to slow down the auto-focus on my 18-55mm kit lens just slightly... though not enough to really be concerned. I suppose I'll have to see any effects from long term use, but I imagine my Canon lenses are built well enough to handle the extra weight.

3. Nowhere on the lens or box does it say Canon, or for Canon, or XS, XT, XSi, 30D, etc...

With that being said, this lens should fit any camera as long as the lens is between 50mm to 58mm. It should also fit video cameras. It's just a general SLR conversion lens that should fit most lenses with the help of the adapter rings.

4. I don't really understand all of the fuss about the HD aspect of it. If you hold the lens to your eye and look through it like a looking glass, it is remarkably bright and clear and indeed "HD". Otherwise, on the camera it looks just fine. Nothing to rave about.

5. As previous reviews mentioned, when zoomed all the way out you get the full "round" fisheye look. You can see the edge of the lens, but it's a nice effect and fun to use. Zoom in a bit and you get a nice wide angle shot. The edges do appear to fuzz a bit, but I don't see this as a huge issue since it is an inexpensive lens, after all.

All in all, I really look forward to using it more. No regrets with the purchase. Photography is an expensive hobby, and I'm happy there are inexpensive options out there for people who are just looking to try out some different shots.

 "FUN" 2010-02-13

It is just an add on and not a true fisheye but it is fun to play with. The pictures turned out fine. Its neat to try new things and at this price it was worth it.

"Great buy for the price" 2010-02-03

For only spending $60, this lens attachment gives great images. Of course, you'd get better pictures with a fisheye lens, but who really wants to spend $700 odd dollars?

 "Fun but not Quality" 2010-01-18
By Neal Fassnacht (nealf)
I just got this for christmas and it is fun to play around with but I was disappointed with how much it affected the quality of the images. It's a cool toy and definitely cheaper than buying a real fish-eye - but you get what pay for and in this case you don't get a sharp image. I would recommend it to someone who just wants to take some shots for fun and isn't worried about having prints made.

"Great value, great photos, fun shooting!" 2010-01-05
By Justin Ryan (Grayslake, IL USA)
I shivered when I saw the prices of fisheye lenses for my Canon XSi until I came across a few of these kind of lenses which instead of integrating into the camera itself, they screw onto the end of the existing lens. This affordable lens takes fantastic wide-angle photos, however there is a pretty extreme barreling effect which I expected after using a 35mm Fisheye by Lomo. I am amazed at the clarity of the photos I have obtained. I was expecting more distortion, chromatic aberration, etc. but this does not seem to be the case with this lens.

Does this compare to a $600 180 degree lens? Probably not. But for someone who isn't using such a lens professionally, this is the perfect starter to get you a taste of what the wide angle can produce.

My ONLY complaint is that the lens cap that came with does not fit with the adapter ring, and so the ring must be removed each time I put the lens away in it's little bag. Nothing serious.

Final thoughts: It's fun, it's cheap, and it produces high quality photos! What more can you ask for?

"Does the job, but could be better" 2010-02-18

The cap keeper stays attached to the cap PRETTY well, but the elastic band is not strong enough. The elastic

loop that goes around the lens keeps coming off once in a while.

"Lens cap strap [With modification}" 2010-01-07
By Joseph P. Portas (Elbert Colorado)
Works a promised with one exception:

Strap [just a stretchy cord] is too short for a lens longer than a standard lens.

I bought it for my NIKON D90 with 18-105 lens .... worked fine for a while but broke the cord after a month of use.

If the cord were longer I'm sure it would not have broken!

Easy fix ........ I replaced the 'cord' with a much longer 1/8" black ribbon from my wife sewing supplies.

Can remove the metal clip at the 'lens barrel' area with needle nose pliers and the 'dot' decal comes off easy

on the 'cap end' so you can rethread any length cord you want. Just make knots at the cap end and the lens end so

the keeper is secured. Works great ....... no tension on the keeper!

Then again just buy another "Keeper" they are so cheap!

 "So far so good" 2010-01-06
By songalex (Mexico,Mexico)
I purchased two one for a 58mm lenses and one for 77mm lense I was afraid that it breaks when i put it to the bigger lenses so i did with care trying not to open it to much to get inside, also I cleaned the surface with cleaning clothes trying to avoid the loss of sticking.

And so far none of the defectives or quality issues of other reviews have happened, remains one piece, remains attached to the cap keeper.

the cap keeper is cheap, but i leave the cap dangle with no extra care, i put and remove the cap often on my 77mm lenses because i have not buy the protection filter and it remains on good shape, no signs of warning.

I recommend the product, but i took the other reviews in mind on "my instalation instructions"
